Ubuntu Linux Part 2

Change duplex settings permanently in Ubuntu / Debian Linux:

Create a file named 1000mbps and save it to etc/init.d/
sudo gedit etc/init.d/1000mbps

#!/bin/sh
ETHTOOL="/usr/sbin/ethtool"
DEV="eth0"
SPEED="1000"
DUPLEX="full"
AUTONEG="on"
case "$1" in
start)
echo -n "Setting eth0 speed 1000 duplex full...";
$ETHTOOL -s $DEV speed $SPEED duplex $DUPLEX autoneg $AUTONEG;
echo " done.";;
stop)
;;
esac
exit 0

Close the file and run:
sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/1000mbps

sudo update-rc.d 1000mbps defaults

sudo /etc/init.d/1000mbps start

NOTE
the following variables in the file will change your settings to what you want:
DEV=""
SPEED=""
DUPLEX=""
AUTONEG=""

another example would be
DEV="eth1"
SPEED="100"
DUPLEX="half"
AUTONEG="off"
